Henry Doig was an exceptionally remarkable talented man who as a Doctor of Medicine served his community by putting his patient's first at all times and putting it in modern language, a 24/ 7 man. His sense of humour was to be admired. Never in my 37 years of friendship did I ever hear him decry his fellow man; he cared deeply about the community where he lived and served it well. Henry was a man of many facets and in each of them endeavoured to always learn and not only learn but teach and pass on his knowledge. Unwittingly he was also a raconteur. You only required to be in his company to recognise this hidden talent, no matter what the subject of conversation was Henry could start off on tangent and have everyone engrossed in what he was saying.

Born in Lennoxtown on the 24th of May 1927 and at the age of three moved to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis when his father was appointed medical officer of health for the islands. Henry eventually followed successfully his father's career and spent many of these years in a medical practice in East Kilbride. He acted on behalf of the Police, Civil Service and East Kilbride Development Corporation for many years. Henry could be called out at any time for accidents, murders, suicides and other cases. For relaxation he had a number of hobbies over the years from Bee keeping, Clock repairs, Clan Doig history and his love of antiques was a high priority. He was the proud owner of a Morris Minor Convertible that he drove around in for many years and he looked after it with great passion (sometimes like how he looked after his patients). All of these were to name but a few of his attributes and pastimes. His workshop was beyond description but Henry knew where everything was (well that is what he told me).

Travelling was a great Doig family tradition. I am not saying that he and his wife Mary and family covered every country in their travels but they were close to it.

Henry joined East Kilbride Rotary club on the 21st of April 1978 and served the club well over the years and became president 1988-89, He was the first President of the club to attend all three Rotary Conferences in his year of office, that is the world conference in Nice,the RIBI Conference in Bournemouth and the District 1230 Conference at Aviemore. He supported the vast majority of club events over many years. His wife Mary always had open doors for home hosting Rotary Youth Exchange youngsters and home hosted people from our twinned town in Ballerup. In 1997 Henry Paul Doig was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by East Kilbride Rotary Club for his service to the club coupled with the service he gave to the town. His ability to share his knowledge with others was exceptional, especially when it came to his career or hobbies

Henry Doig was one of the best, a unique person who will be a great loss to the club and also to the town that he served so well. Indeed it was a pleasure for those who knew him and who are able to say why they found him such a friendly person. Henry will be sadly missed not just from Rotary but also by the local community and those who knew him. Henry is survived by his wife Mary & two sons Robert & John and their families.
